Essense

Mapping expereince

Essence was an exhibition that involved interdisciplinary teams. The brief was to map the experience of a recent trip. There were six members of the interdisciplinary team from a variety of creative backgrounds.

We chose to map the feeling or essence of the trip that no photos can capture, creating a more holistic picture. We looked into the idea of trying to allow people to understand your experience without you being there and secondly to allow you to remember more than just the sights on your trip.

Essense was a cultural probe to aid you to map all your sensual encounters on a trip. From foods and feelings to sights and sounds can all be mapped in a portable and convenient package.

We tested the product with some individuals with mixed results. The kit was limited to small dimensions which limited its effectiveness. However the feedback from all involved was constructive and helped the team understand how memory is associated to certain items and how it changes depending on someone's character, for example a teacher and and an accountant will remember the same experiences with different memory prompts.
